He has been replaced by Japanese driver Sakon Yamamoto in the Hispania Racing Team for the time being, but ace Indian driver Karun Chandhok is not disheartened by the sudden move and, instead, is counting the positives he gained from his Formula One stint.
Hispania announced before the German Grand Prix that Chandhok would be replaced by Yamamoto, who had replaced teammate Bruno Senna at the British Grand Prix, and Chandhok feels it was a team decision aimed at trying out all the drivers.
“ They want to evaluate the drivers they have and I must respect that decision.
I am happy with my performance and even the team is pleased with my performance as I was consistently ahead of my teammates,” Chandhok said.
“ I still hope to feature in some of the remaining races, if not all. But things are up in the air right now.
In the next two or three weeks, the team will decide internally as to what it intends to do,” he said.
With Hispania keen to try out all its options, Chandhok too is looking ahead to the next season and exploring all the available opportunities.
“ Even though this season is not finished for me, I am looking to the next season as well. I am talking to a few other teams and let’s see how things go,” he said.
“ It was a tough season for the team, especially running at the back.
“ But personally, it has been good for me.
The team has developed a good fan base around the world and my personal stock as an F1 driver has gone up by several notches compared to six or seven months back.” The next season will be crucial as it will see the debut of the Indian Grand Prix, scheduled to be held in Greater Noida.
The presence of Chandhok at the Indian GP will be a huge draw and fans would be keen to see an Indian in an Indian F1 race.
Chandhok, who was in the Capital for a commercial engagement with his sponsors Jaypee Sports International — also the promoters of the Indian Grand Prix — had a look at the upcoming F1 track and was pleased with what he saw.
And Chandhok’s fans would be hoping to see the Indian blaze through the track at home.
