DRDO stealth radar to mislead enemy trackers

The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) is at an advanced stage of developing a state- of- the- art radar that helps aircraft and ships scan large swathes in a stealth mode.

The research organisation is at the product development stage of the Advanced Electronically Scanned Array (AESA) radar which sends its signals through numerous small transmitter and receives them back with small receiver modules over frequencies of different bandwidth, thus misleading a radar tracker, yet creating a better picture for situational awareness.

R. Kuller of the DRDO said on Monday that the radar would be ready for integration with weapons platforms by 2013, fulfiling the Indian Air Force (IAF) and the navy’s desperate need of these radars.

The radars will then be fitted to Tejas Mark II light combat aircraft and the existing and the future fleet of Sukhoi - 30 MKIs.

Boeing has offered F/ A 18 Super Hornet’s AN/ APG- 79 AESA radar to India on a full transfer of technology basis. The European Aerospace and Defence Systems (EADS), makers of the Eurofighter, have also made the offer of collaborating with the DRDO for developing the technology.

So has Israeli company Elta Systems. However, a DRDO source said: “ We don’t need any collaboration on the radar technology at this stage.”
